Its Foundations

Alfio Genovese, was brought into the craft of quality coffee making through the ranks of a major Italian coffee house. He came to Australia in the early 1950's with his wife and after some ten years working with an Australia-wide coffee wholesaler based in Sydney, he was sent to Melbourne to manage a new branch opened specifically for the Victorian market. After gaining enough knowledge here they decided that it was about time the genuine Italian product was given the attention it deserved. As a consequence, A. Genovese & Sons was incorporated in early 1970 to service the Australian market with true Italian coffee.

Its Development

By the 1970's, speciality Italian coffee lounges were abundant: both in the city and in the country. But the coffee they served had little resemblance to the original Italian style. They found rapid acceptance to their hand-made genuine product. Soon it became apparent that just producing good coffee was not enough. Reliable supplies of the right beans were just as necessary as supply of efficient and reliable in-house production equipment and espresso machines. Genovese personally imports all their own raw beans and equipment.

A blend which has evolved through constant development of high grade coffees to the point where it is regularly tasted on a batch by batch basis to ensure the ultimate in flavour. It is a marriage of traditional Italian blending techniques with the ever demanding Australian Palate.
